Kusunoki Ko (楠宏)
Ko KUSUNOKI (November 18, 1921 -) is a Japanese geophysicist and geographer. He specializes in glaciology and regional geography in the polar circle. He was born in Kushiro City, Hokkaido. He is a descendant of Masashige KUSUNOKI..
Brief Personal History
1944: He graduated from Department of Physics, school of science in Hokkaido University.
1948: He became assistant professor in Hokkaido University.
September 1956: He was selected for the 1st Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.
1966: He visited Byrd Station and the South Pole with invitation of the Department of State of the United States of America. He was the second in command on the 8th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.
1968: He assumed the post of leader of the 10th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.
February 1969: He assumed the post of leader of the 10th Antarctic wintering party.
1972: He assumed the post of leader of the 14th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. After returning home, he assumed the post of Manager of the archive division of the polar research department in the National Museum of Nature and Science.
1973: He assumed the post of chief researcher of National Institute of Polar Research.
1976: He assumed the post of leader of the 18th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.
February 1977: Heassumed the post of leader of the 18th Antarctic wintering party.
He is an emeritus professor in the National Institute of Polar Research.
Achievements
He led the 10th, 14th and 18th Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions and also led the10th and 18th Antarctic wintering parties.
He has written many items related to geography about the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle in encyclopedias. He is Japan's leading authority on the topography of the polar regions.
